Question 2

Are there restrictive terms within the agreement/award?

Fundamental Research means basic and applied research in science and engineering, where the resulting information is shared broadly within the scientific community.

The proposed research is not considered “Fundamental” if the sponsor has restrictions within the Terms and Conditions of the agreement.

Possible restrictions may be:

  • Foreign Participation Restrictions (see Question 2a)
  • Publication Restrictions (see Question 2b)
  • Sponsor has specified that the material or information associated with the agreement/award will be export controlled (Question 2c)
  • Dissemination of Research results

In summary, any contractual or sponsor-imposed restrictions on foreign participation, publication approval or dissemination of research results negate the status of fundamental research.
