Phase 1: Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative online training for undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral researchers, and National Science Foundation investigators
All undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers who are supported on a sponsored project must complete the online RCR training in CITI within 60 days of employment. When a student’s status at ASU changes (i.e., undergraduate to graduate, graduate to post doc), the student must meet the requirements for the new status.
All NSF investigators and other senior personnel are required to take “RCR – Faculty and Senior Personnel Responsible Conduct of Research” training in CITI. This is effective for NSF proposals awarded after July 31, 2023. ERA will place an automatic hold status on new NSF awards pending Responsible Conduct of Research training completion.
To complete the training in CITI, view these login and enrollment instructions. Select “Responsible Conduct of Research” and then select the RCR training that fits your academic level according to the table below.

Researchers who have already completed, or are in the process of completing, one of the five courses are not required to also complete the new course. |
Phase 2: RCR workshops
Post-docs are required to complete Responsible Conduct of Research Phase ll training within their first year of appointment. This is additional research ethics training that all postdocs must complete per ASU policy. In order to meet this obligation, you must attend at least one RCR workshop.
The Research Compliance Office hosts several workshops a year during fall and spring semesters. The workshops are led by faculty or staff with expertise in the topic area. Upcoming workshops will be listed below once they are scheduled.

Phase 3: Principal investigator-led ongoing training
Phase 3 training is led by the principal investigator on an ongoing basis. Investigators must document their activities and have them available for inspection upon request.
