You do NOT need to obtain an export license!
It is important to note that this information is only for general review of your plans. If your project changes, please note that this determination may no longer be applicable. If you had any hesitation in answering “no” to any of the preceding questions, you should contact the Export Control team in Research Operations immediately for assistance in further evaluation of your project.
You will need to document any physical export of items, information or software as described below:
Documentation Instructions
The Export Control team will provide assistance with documenting tangible export(s) of items (hardware, equipment, materials, components), information (technical publications and data, drawings, blueprints, schematics) or software (tangible media containing programs in source code or object code) that qualifies for shipment, transfer or transmission under “No License Required” (NLR) status.
NOTE: Researchers are advised to also keep records of all export documentation, including financial records and shipping documentation (i.e., Commercial Invoices, Shippers’ Export Declarations) in their research project files for a period of five years from the date of export, re-export or transfer of controlled information to a foreign national. The Export Control team recommends that all international shipments use FEDEX shipping or another commercial vendor that provides export documentation support. Contact the Export Control team at exp[email protected] for assistance.
Foreign Travel
Travel outside the United States can require a License(s). This depends on several factors included the travel destination, what type of equipment/data will be taking, the type of project and the collaborator.
Some countries may have travel warnings issued by the Department of State with special instructions for Americans travelling to those countries. Please feel free to contact the Export Control team for a travel briefing for high risk countries or if you have any concerns.
If you have any questions, contact the Export Control team at [email protected] and ask for an export control assessment.
